Dear writing buddies, HAPPY NEW YEAR

Welcome to another post for the Insecure Writers Support Group.

The start of a new year, and a new Anthology. Congratulations to all the selected.

I suppose the judges didn't like my characters or boring descriptions ....

January 6 question - Being a writer, when you're reading someone else's work, what stops you from finishing a book/throws you out of the story/frustrates you the most about other people's books?

To enjoy a book and read on, I need to get into it. If I can't finish a chapter each time I pick it up, that is a sure sign that I probably won't finish it.

What enables me to plunge into a book. The topic, first. Fiction or Non fiction, the theme has to relate to my world in some way. Even if my experiences don't encompass the plot or characters, I need to care about the universe, actions and emotions set in play.

Non Fiction :  History, Civilisations, Art, Cinema, "Bande Déssinée" which is very different to the US Comics universe. Poetry, Theatre, Novels analysis.

Fiction: Historical, but not Romance; Science Fiction, Fantasy, Magic; Crime and Mystery; Life experiences.

All these are my favourites. I also enjoy novels with several ' Voices ' or points of view; or several different timelines or settings which overlap in some interesting way.

What really annoys me, is too much sex ..... get a life ......
or too many unrealistic worries or emotional outpours.
The impossible does not put me off, only the removed from Human probable.

That's all Folks.
Thanks for visiting.

Dawn to a more promising year.

  1. Hi and Happy New Year!

I am sorry that your story didn't get selected, but I don't think it was because of your characters or that the story was boring. There is always lot of stiff competition in anthology contests.

Keep competing and don't give up.

  3. Good points! I don't want a lot of sex or violence in my books either. And if it's a romance, I want it to follow the story not the other way around.
    Wishing you a wonderful-writing year.

  4. I agree with you about too much sex. :-) Although I like the romance genre in general and read romances a lot, I prefer them with the limited amount of sex on the pages. There are some romance writers readers rave about, and I can't read them at all because the onslaught of the sexual or sensual scenes drown the plot and almost erase the characters.

  6. Happy New Year! I have to say the writing is the main thing that turns me off from a book. I can deal with different subject matters, but if the writing isn't there, I move on. But there are some things I could do without when it comes to reading, such as violence, yet I incorporate it into some of my stories/novels.
